Why, do you ask, is this a pretty crappy picture and in black and white? Because the kouprey is like a ghost. It is so hard to find that only very few people, at least American scientists, have been able to see one. And if they have, it's hard to get good pictures. It is hard to find because it is a critically endangered species as there are only about 200 in the wild. That and it lives in the thick forests of Cambodia, Thailand, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Viet Nam.
What is it? Basically it is a type of wild cattle and is also called the forest ox. No scientist has seen a kouprey close up since 1957, and what we do know of it comes from what little of it was actually filmed back in 1957. The creature is also nocturnal, and very shy. They are endangered mostly because of habitat loss and the fact their meat is highly prized for trade, as is their horns and skulls. Both males and females have horns, but are shaped rather differently.
